Heavyweight Champ: Why No One Cares

Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman. These are some of the most popular and legendary heavyweight boxers the world has ever seen. Their feats inside the squared circle are epic and historical, followed by millions around the globe. But they are in the past, and numerous heavyweight champions have already come and gone with the titles that these greats once held. So why haven’t we seen newer versions of these heavyweight legends? Why haven’t the latest heavyweight champions become as popular as these icons were?

One of the reasons that can be deduced from this decline in popularity is that most of the heavyweight boxers today are not as charismatic and as charming as their predecessors once were. Ali, Frazier, Foreman, and even Mike Tyson back then possessed an insurmountable amount of charisma that made their personalities and their fights spectacular.

Another factor that may be behind this is the fact that most fighting aficionados want faster, more exciting, and explosive bouts; and most of the fights that fall under this category are to be found in the featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight divisions. Many fight fans find that heavyweight boxers tend to become slow in action, and most title fights are dull to watch compared to the fast and furious bouts in the lighter divisions.

Another reason is that there are no historical and bitter rivalries lately in the heavyweight division. There haven’t been so many trilogies or rematches that epic boxing sagas are composed of.

Also, there are other fight sports that may have eaten away some of the viewing population of boxing today. This includes the rise of alternative sports such as kickboxing and mixed martial arts that both possess exciting and bloody matches, much to the delight of the fight aficionado.

Although heavyweight boxing has experienced a decline in popularity, this doesn’t mean that people will stop watching these monstrous athletes from slugging it out inside the ring. They may find their way back into mainstream consciousness by finding that
elusive new heavyweight that will possess the strength, speed, endurance, not to mention charisma and charm that will revive the division.
